Are You Actually Discerning Marriage, or Just Dating Comfortably?
Overview
Dating can feel comfortable and enjoyable, but comfort alone does not mean a relationship is moving toward marriage. Without intentional discernment, couples can drift without clarity or direction. This article encourages dating couples to ask honest questions about their future and approach the relationship with purpose. True discernment brings clarity, not pressure, and helps couples move forward with confidence.
Dating can feel good when things are easy.
You enjoy spending time together. Conversation flows. There is affection, consistency, and a sense of comfort. Nothing feels particularly wrong, and that can seem like a sign that everything is right.
But comfort and clarity are not the same thing.
One of the quiet risks in dating is settling into a relationship that feels good in the present but is not moving toward a clear future. Without realizing it, couples can spend months or even years together without seriously asking the deeper question:
Are we discerning marriage, or just enjoying the relationship?
Dating, especially in a Catholic context, is not meant to be an indefinite experience. It has a purpose. It is a season of discernment, a time to intentionally seek whether God is calling you to marriage with this specific person.
That requires more than simply “seeing how things go.”
It involves asking honest questions:
Are we aligned in our faith and values?
Do we handle conflict in a healthy way?
Can I realistically see myself living a lifelong vocation with this person?
These questions are not meant to create pressure. They are meant to bring clarity.
When a relationship becomes primarily about comfort, it often avoids these deeper conversations. Not because either person is unwilling, but because things feel “good enough” as they are. There is no urgency to evaluate or define.
But over time, that lack of direction can lead to confusion, frustration, or delayed decisions that become more difficult later.
Intentional dating does not remove joy from the relationship. It strengthens it.
When both people understand that the relationship is moving toward discernment, it creates a shared sense of purpose. Conversations become more meaningful. Time together becomes more directed. Even challenges become opportunities to learn something important about your potential future.
If you find yourself in a comfortable relationship, that is not a problem.
But it is an invitation.
Take a step back and ask: Are we moving toward something, or simply maintaining what we have?
You do not need to have every answer right away. But you do need to begin asking the right questions.
Clarity is a gift you give to each other.
If you are unsure how to navigate these conversations or want guidance in discerning well, our courses and coaching are designed to help dating couples approach this season with purpose, confidence, and a clear understanding of what they are building toward.
